When Apple released the 3GS it came with a much needed increase in speed and battery life - essential given that the iPhone can be used for mobile browsing, as a portable games console, video player, photo viewer and iPod.
Video recording, voice dialling and multimedia messaging also came too. However, it took a while to address lingering call quality issues carried over from the previous model. It's also irritating to have to press the screen so many times just to display the numerical keypad.
Still, a nice feature is the ability to make direct calls from embedded numbers in messages and emails.
The large 3.5in display makes for excellent web browsing and web searching and zooming in and out doesn't come much better. Contact management also now benefits from this ease of navigation.
The camera is still a let-down with only 3 megapixels and no flash or zoom, but the 3GS 32GB has a natty video capture feature.
The 3GS 32MB also features an accelerometer that permits true navigation rather than just basic geo-location functions, but it’s not quite a replacement for a bespoke satnav.
