Inline with Nokia’s green mission, they have now produced a mobile phone charger which uses a dynamo to generate electricity from the movement of bicycle wheels.
The charger can be fitted into any Nokia phone with a 2 mm charger jack and the kit includes a holder to secure the phone to the bicycle. To start charging the phone up, a cyclist needs to travel around four miles per hour and for an average model a 10 minute journey at 6mph will produce around 28 minutes of talk time or 37 hours of standby time. The faster the speed of the cyclist, the more battery life will be generated.
In many parts of the world, bicycles are the main mode of transport and electricity can be limited so the new charger will be very useful. It will also be useful in more developed countries where cycling is being encouraged more and more as a greener mode of transport.
The charger will also be good for the environment, potentially replacing the need in the future for traditional mobile phone batteries which contain harmful chemicals which are released into the ground and water sources when not recycled responsibly.
The charger will go on sale later in the year for about £12.
